01 — Freshness Decoder

Every code, decoded in seconds

Breweries encode canning dates in formats that were never meant for consumers. Hoplocker decodes them — Julian dates, brewery shortcodes, facility identifiers — and gives you the actual date plus a freshness verdict before money leaves your wallet.

  • Julian, Gregorian, and brewery-specific formats
  • Facility location from plant code lookup
  • Style-aware freshness window (IPAs vs. lagers differ)
02 — New Releases Feed

New drops, the day they hit shelves

Limited releases sell out in hours. Hoplocker monitors brewery feeds and aggregates new canning announcements into a single, scannable list — filtered to styles you collect, sorted by release date, with freshness windows calculated up front.

  • Style and brewery filters, not an algorithm
  • Release date, can format, and distribution region
  • FRESH badge when canning date is verified

03 — My Collection

A cellar with a clock inside

Add any beer to your collection and Hoplocker tracks its freshness from the canning date forward. The grade changes in real time as days tick by — so you know whether to drink tonight or wait, and you can see at a glance which cans are past peak.

  • Freshness grades recalculate daily
  • Sort and filter by style, grade, or brewery
  • Notes field per entry for your own tasting log
The difference

A beer diary tracks what you drank. Hoplocker tells you whether you should drink it at all.

How it works

Point. Decode. Know.

The workflow is deliberate: a minimum of friction between a can in your hand and the data you need to decide.

01
At the store or the tap

Scan the production code

Open the Scanner, point your camera at the can bottom or crowler lid, and Hoplocker reads the code. No typing, no manual lookup. Supported code formats are updated as breweries change their stamps.

Reads: Julian dates · brewery shortcodes · plant IDs
02
Instant result

Read the data card

Canning date, facility location, days since canning, and a freshness grade (A+ through F) calibrated to the specific style. An IPA past 45 days reads differently than a barleywine at 6 months.

Grades: A+ · A · B · C · F — with recommended drink window
03
Build your list

Save to your collection

Add the can to your collection with one tap. The grade recalculates daily as the beer ages, so you always know the current status of everything in your fridge or cellar — not just what it was when you bought it.

Updates: Daily freshness recalculation on all saved beers
04
Stay ahead

Watch the releases feed

The releases feed surfaces new drops filtered to styles you track. When a limited release hits, you see it with the canning date already resolved — so you can calculate freshness before it even reaches your local bottle shop.

Questions

Real answers, no pitch

If your question isn't here, it belongs in the product — ask it and it becomes a feature.

Which breweries and code formats does Hoplocker support?
Hoplocker decodes production codes from the major US craft breweries — including Julian date formats, facility shortcodes used by regional and national breweries, and best-by date formats. The database is updated as breweries change their stamping systems. If a code doesn't decode, you can enter the date manually and still get full freshness tracking.
How does Hoplocker determine freshness windows by style?
Freshness windows are calibrated per style based on hop chemistry and malt profile. Hop-forward styles like IPAs and DIPAs have a tight window — typically 30-45 days for peak flavor. Malt-forward styles like stouts and porters are more forgiving. Lagers and pilsners fall somewhere between. Hoplocker applies the right window to each beer based on its categorized style, not a one-size number.
Is this different from checking the best-by date printed on the can?
Best-by dates are set by the brewery's marketing team — often 120 or 180 days out — not by a flavor chemist. For hop-forward styles especially, peak freshness is much earlier than the best-by date suggests. Hoplocker gives you the actual canning date and a grade based on how the style actually tastes at that age, not just whether it's technically in code.
What if the can has no visible code, or the code is smudged?
You can enter a best-by date manually and Hoplocker will backtrack to estimate the canning date based on the brewery's known labeling practices. It's less precise than a scanned code, but it still produces a freshness grade and adds the beer to your collection.
Can I use Hoplocker at a bottle shop or brewery taproom — not just at home?
That's exactly what the scanner is built for. Open the app, point at the can, get the result in a few seconds. No account required for a one-off scan — the collection and release feed features require an account.
How is this different from Untappd?
Untappd is a social platform built around check-ins and ratings. Its primary value is discovery through friends and community. Hoplocker is a reference tool: it tells you the actual age and freshness of a specific can in your hand, and it surfaces new releases with verified production data. The two aren't really in competition — one is a social diary, the other is a precision instrument.
